Company Roles and Research
Sector
I am primarily focussing my career towards the VFX sector working on Digi Doubles as well as real and fantasy creatures. I would also like to work on motion capture but that is something I will need to work on as I currently have no experience in that field.
Role
My ideal starting role in VFX would be a junior animator. However due to the immense volume of applicants who are higher skill levels than fresh graduates like myself I do believe I will either have to begin again as a runner or a match move artist doing 3D tracking or possibly even as an intern. All 3 I am more than happy to do as I have prior experience.

- Computer literacy skills
- Experience with Linux
- Ability to work in teams

Companies
Cinesite
Cinesite is a multinational worldwide 3D feature animation and VFX house. They produce work for a multitude of audiences from children, which is primarily what their 3D feature animation is aimed at. All the way up to adults which their more VFX work is aimed at. Some examples of their more children centered work would be; The Addams Family 1 and 2, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, and Extinct just to name a few. Although these are all stunning visual spectacles in their own rights, for me it’s just not the style of animation I enjoy at the moment. However that's not to say I won't ever be. Personally I am more interested in their works tailored towards their more adult audiences such as The Witcher, Halo and numerous Marvel movies and tv shows. That being said, it would be massively appealing to work for a company who does both like Cinesite as it would give me the option to swap between the two if the opportunity arose.
Cinesite for its VFX at least has a reasonably standard pipeline consisting of modelling, Sculpting, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting, simulation (FX and cloth/hair), rendering and compositing.
This is a mostly generic VFX pipeline consisting of the following software; Nuke, 3D Equaliser, Maya, Zbrush, 3D Studio Max, Substance Painter, Houdini and Arnold/Vray. As well as this, much like many VFX companies, they have started to incorporate Unreal Engine into their pipeline. However as this is relatively new tech it is still being worked out how to use it efficiently as well as where exactly it can be implemented.
Cinesite has 3 offices across the globe. 1 being in London, and the other 2 being in Canada, specifically in Vancouver and Montreal. I will primarily be looking into the location of the London office, however it is nice to see they have options to emigrate to Canada if I ever felt the need to. The London office is based at 10 Little Portland Street, making it only a 50 minute journey from my house. This for me I feel is a reasonable commute, and is definitely one worth making to work at a company like Cinesite. Please find a map of the transport route below.
Unfortunately at the time of writing this there are no active junior animation job roles available for me to quote requirements from. However please refer to the above role requirements section to get an idea of a generic requirement for a junior animator in the VFX sector. However, if the requirements are anything like that, I feel with the standard of my showreel I feel I would stand a good chance of getting to the interview stage at least. Cinesite however does run internships. However they are as of yet to open the applications for the summer 2023 internships. That being said, after looking at past offerings they offer internships in two sectors; Layout and Matchmove. Both key gateways into the animation side of VFX, making these opportunities something I will be applying to if they become available in the near future.
I am lucky enough to have gone to Cinesite in April of 2022 for an animation mixer event. The event itself was amazing. I got to meet animators from Pixar and learn about their personal experiences in animation as they gave out advice freely if needed. However for me that wasn't the best part. That for me was meeting Samir Ansari. A former Ravensbourne student who was now CG Supervisor at Cinesite. Samir in the months to come became, and still is a key contact for me. And is in fact pretty much who my showreel is aimed to impress. To the point that Samir is definitely someone who I want to invite to the degree show as Cinesite for me would be an amazing place to start my career.

DNEG
Dneg, similarly to Cineiste, is a massive multinational worldwide VFX studio. However they are much, much bigger. Dneg has a staggering 10 different studios world wide, from LA to Canada, The UK, India and a newly opened studio in Australia. As well as VFX they also have a recently opened 3D feature animation department which was created when they merged with animation studio; Locksmith Animation. Since then they have created their first IP of Ron’s Gone Wrong, and are believed to be working on several other projects. So just like Cinsite they have a varied target audience between their 3D feature side, and their VFX side. One of the only ways that Dneg is different is the amount of different projects they work on. Which is reflective when you look at their filmography which is full of Marvel and DC movies, plus nearly any big budget film you can think of. Making this for me at least, a very interesting place to think about working.
Once again much like Cineiste, Dneg has a reasonably generic pipeline consisting of the industry standard software stated above, while also again delving into Unreal work too. I would say even more so than Cinesite. To the point a friend of mine recommended I learn it before I graduate to get an edge up on the competition. Something I will definitely look into if I get the time this term.
Location wise, as stated above Dneg is widely diverse and offers many places to work worldwide if I see the need to. As well as this, their office in London is only 52 minutes from my house. It is once again, just like Cinesite, within a perfect range of commute for me. And one that is especially worth it to work at a company like Dneg. Please find a map of the transport route below.

Unlike Cinesite I was able to find a job role for animation on the Dneg website, however it is for a mid level animator role. That being said I still feel the skills required would at least be somewhat transferable to a junior role. The requirements are shown below;

Looking at the above requirements and lowering them slightly by a few years experience I feel like with the quality of my animations and my competency when it comes down to understanding and implementing the core mechanics of animation. Making me believe that if I were to apply to a junior or speculative role when the opportunity arises, I would be a successful candidate in the application. Dneg also offers an internship called the Greenlight scheme which is a 20 week intensive course which if you pass is a near guaranteed gateway into working at Dneg. A definite thing I will take into consideration when I start doing applications in December/January.

I am once again lucky enough to have a high up contact at Dneg. That being Natalie Reid who is an Exec Producer at Dneg. We met up for a drink in October where we discussed my aims and ambitions and whether or not I still have an interest in working in VFX. Please visit my Industry Events/Interactions page if you wish to find out more about the interaction itself. Due to this key connection I feel that Dneg is without a doubt the most key company in starting my career. And in all honesty that would be amazing.

Framestore

Similarly to Dneg, Framestore is another massive multinational worldwide VFX production house. They again have offices in LA, Vancouver, Chicago, New York, Montreal, London, Mumbai and Melbourne. However, unlike Dneg and Cinesite, Framestore solely specialises in VFX. Now will this be a permanent thing? I am not so sure but at this current moment they are sticking to what they know and keeping away from purely animated 3D features. As well as this Framestore is one of few VFX houses who offer everything from script writing all the way to final product, which in itself is an achievement for a single company to be able to confidently offer to a client. The work that Framestore produces is generally targeted at teenagers and upwards, however they also produce some more child friendly films and tv such as Tom and Jerry. However they primarily produce VFX for Disney, Marvel and once again, nearly any other big budget movie you can think of.
Framestore again has a very normal industry standard pipeline, however unlike the prior two they don't seem to be delving too much into unreal at this stage. Is this to do with the seemingly stick to their guns approach of the company? I believe it could be, however I don't see why they wouldn't start utilising it once it's a more understood and industry standardised software.
The London office of Framestore is again only a short 56 minute commute from my house. Making it again a very reasonable commute to work at such an amazing company.
Again I was sadly unable to find any active job openings which have appropriate goals for myself, however I did again find a mid level animation role. I once again feel that taking experience into consideration and lowering the requirements to a more entry level role I believe I would be a suitable candidate for the role. Please find a list of requirements below.
Framestore also has an internship scheme called Launchpad. Something I have actually applied for in the past and sadly didn't get. However I will be applying for the opportunity again in January as I feel now with an extra year's worth of experience and understanding under my belt that I am a much more desirable and appropriate candidate for the role. So roll on January!
Sadly I do not have any active contacts in Framestore in an appropriate role. The only contacts I have that work there are personal friends of mine; Dan Warder and Dan Dindarov, who are both FX artists. Maybe they would be able to put in a good word for me and vouch for me? However I would like to make contact with someone at Framestore in the near future who would be able to help me develop as an animator. I believe a good place for this would be any of the upcoming bring your own animation events so I will be attending as many as I can.
